Uppsala

With its 200,000 inhabitants, Uppsala is the fourth largest city in Sweden. The city is best known for its university, one of the oldest in the world.

Ingmar Bergman was born in Uppsala, in Akademiska hospital, 14 July 1918. His maternal grandmother lived in the town, in a large apartment on Trädgårdsgatan, and Bergman spent a lot of time there as a child. Fanny and Alexander is set entirely in the city, as is a great deal of The Best Intentions. Otherwise, Uppsala mostly features in Bergman's writings, particularly in The Magic Lantern.
