About the production
Opening night was met with bravos and standing ovations. Riemann's performance was met with mixed reviews: whereas Der Tagesspiegel wrote that 'she cries like a diva of the silent movies or whines like a girl who has lost her parents at the zoo,' the tone was completely different in Berliner Morgenpost, where Riemann's Marianne was compared with Ullmann's: 'Warning! This Marianne has got her boots on! Riemann adds to the staging with a reflective wittiness.'
Johannes Zacher's stage design had noticably simplified the bourgeois home of Marianne and Johan in the TV-series. As Peter Hans Göpfert put it in Berliner Morgenpost: 'No velvet sofa, no fancy clothed dining table. An abstract stage with a pair of spotlights and a pair of simple chairs.'
