About the text
Sunny days are few and far between in Bergman’s 1940’s prose:
The time is 8 o’clock at night. It’s stopped raining, but it’s still cloudy. Darkness is falling rapidly. The churchyard trees stand heavy, dripping with rain. Somewhere, a bird attempts a forlorn, frozen little song.
