Divorce traces Gertrud Holmgren’s (Inga Tidblad) journey toward inner balance and freedom through trials and tribulations.

Gertrud (Inga Tidblad) initially rejects Bertil (Alf Kjellin), but soon gives in to her longing for his love, and they spend the night together. For two days they live in bliss.

Bertil (Alf Kjellin) is engaged with the coquettish, self-confident, and rather shallow Marianne Berg (Doris Svedlund). She wants him to open an practice in Stockholm, so they can start living in style. Bertil prefers medical research and is happy to take employment in the countryside.

Harriet Andersson is quickly glimpsed in Divorced, as a telephonist job applicant. Two years later, she would have her big break in Summer with Monika.

During the Christmas celebration, Bertil (Alf Kjellin) ends up quarreling with his wife (Doris Svedlund). Later that evening when Marianne has gone home, he declares his love for Gertrud (Inga Tidblad). Experience makes her hesitant to come between the married couple, and she suggest that they stay friends.

The Holmgren spouses ( Inga Tidblad and Holger Löwenadler) have lived together for over twenty years. But Tore has filed for divorce. He has fallen in love with a work colleague, the doctor and associate professor Cecilia Lindeman.

The surrounding is not blind to Getrud (Inga Tidblad) and Bertil’s (Alf Kjellin) feelings for each other.

Divorced was Grevenius fourth collaboration with Bergman, and the third script by Bergman to be directed by Gustaf Molander.
