After seven years at sea Johannes Blom (Birger Malmsten) returns back home to Stockholm.

The rivalry over the variety artist Sally (Gertrud Fridh) almost leads to Alexander Blom (Holger Löwenadler) murdering his own son (Birger Malmsten).

In the book Images Bergman writes about how a certain degree of delusions of grandeur got to him during the filming of A Ship to India : ’When I finished Ship to India, I was overwhelmed by an euphoric feeling of greatness. I thought I devastatlingly good, just as good as the French directors who were my idols.’

A Ship to India was screened at the Cannes Film Festival 1948 and the jury gave the film an honourable mention. While the reception for the film in Sweden considerably less enthusiastic.
