As can be seen from the list of the actors' salaries, Harriet Andersson was only paid a modest 4000 Swedish kronor for her role as Monika.

Bergman said, years later in the interview book Bergman about Bergman that he’d never made a less complicated film. ’ [...] there were no arrangements and we had fun and the script was very summa­rily and we did scenes."

Monika (Harriet Andersson) and Harry Lund (Lars Ekborg) are one of Bergman’s many young working-class couples.

Although Monika is usually spoken of as Andersson’s first role in a Bergman film, the actress can be glimpsed in both While the City Sleeps and Divorced.

Summer with Monika made Andersson a sex symbol. In the US the film was even marketed as Monica: The Story of a Bad Girl.

Back in town at the end of summer, Harry (Lars Ekborg) and Monika’s idyll is quickly shattered.
